REVERB 2008: Brothers of the Sonic Cloth @ The Sunset
Seattle band Brothers of the Sonic Cloth -- the latest project from Tad Doyle of Tad -- sounds priestly, and the astral musical communion it offers is both deeply spiritual sounding and perhaps death rattle bone shaking at the same time. Obviously adored by adorable-herself KEXP Audioasis DJ Hannah Levin, the band played tribute to Doyle's power and beloved place in the history of Seattle music, but also reminded the future that the past is chewing on its ass (and vice versa).

6 PM may have seemed a little early for a space rock buzz this strong, but the lean set was filled with so much delirious expectation and delicious tension from the club's packed pile of fans that the pay-off, played out by Tad on his guitar and from-the-hollow-earth vocals, the drumming of Eric Akre, and the mesmerizing bass playing of Tad's gal Peggy, could have happened in any arbitrary frame of time.

As Brothers of the Sonic Cloth drew whoops of tribute from deep in the lungs of younger fans who have discovered that Tad was one of the very best things on Sub Pop, and not as many older grunge-hounds as you might have guessed, it's clear that Levin's choice for the first Audioasis broadcast was canny and astute. This could easily silence any KCMU fans who think that KEXP still doesn't have the raw guys to obliterate the airwaves with pure rock and roll apocalypse. You can find the actual article here.

Seattle Weekly - July 30, 2008 by Hannah Levin
Tad of BOTSCA similar, if more long-winding, creative path is being traveled by former TAD leader Tad Doyle, who has spent far too many years living in the shadow of his exalted grunge era band. I'm as guilty as anyone of waxing nostalgic about that band's much-missed greatness, but after finally catching his new project Brothers of the Sonic Cloth at the Funhouse last Saturday, I have taken a solemn vow to knock off that wistful bullshit immediately. Originally conceived primarily as a recording project, the Brothers (which includes Doyle's girlfriend and veteran punk bassist Peggy Tully, along with esteemed Seattle drummer Eric Akre) is now a thundering, lysergically inclined unit with its own distinct sonic identity and thoroughly mesmerizing live presence. They don't have any Seattle dates booked in the immediate future, but you can catch them down in Portland at Berbati's Pan this Saturday, Aug. 2, with Harvey Milk.

Who: Brothers of the Sonic Cloth
Where: Jules Maes Saloon, Georgetown, WA
When: Friday, June 6
Tad Doyle inspires exaggerations. Over the course of a four‐song set by his new band, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, I uttered the following:
1) “He’s, like, a great, American hero.”
2) “He’s, like, a folk legend, or something.”Al and Eric of BOTSC
Even his name lends itself to exaggeration: TAD. It’s nearly impossible for me to type his name in anything other than ALL CAPS. TAD! In reality, Tad Doyle is about the kindest, most gentle soul I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. He’s a big guy, for sure. That’s why, when paired with music that's as heavy as a steamroller, he becomes a larger‐than‐life character.
This new band, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, is, like all things TAD, heavy! There are the crunching, sledgehammer chords he’s synonymous with, the thick‐as‐cement vocals, and the titanic presence of a man who does not have to move much to command attention. They played four songs. To me, they sounded like a less‐stoned, more centered Kyuss. There were space‐y instrumental passages that ebbed and flowed, most of which built up to insurmountable sheets of pound‐you‐in‐the‐chest metal! Along with his bassist girlfriend Peg (pictured below) and a drummer who gave himself a workout pounding the skins to match Tad’s massive sound, they were surprisingly tight, the kind of band that would have no trouble filling a bigger room (the Showbox, say) with sound. It’s awesome enough just seeing TAD Doyle on stage in Seattle again, but this is no nostalgia act. He is pure heart and soul, a big, shy man hiding under a baseball cap that says “COURAGE” (no, really, it said “COURAGE” in ALL CAPS). He screams into the microphone, makes his guitar rumble like a piece of heavy equipment, and once the smoke clears and noise settles, he says quietly to the crowd: “We’re really grateful to be here with you tonight. Some of us could be dead. But we’re not.”

Song: "Wrecked Nation"
Artist: Brothers of the Sonic Cloth
Though myspaced in quality, this song is still full of the tasty genre-ific metal goodness you lack in your life. This band shows promise.
